You think homeschooling is the "sheltered life?"

Reply to This

Hello:
Not homeschooling pre say, but the children who are the "unschooled". Their are many very good homeschoolers who involve their children in sports or the community, but I worry about the children who are the "Unschooled". They are also called home-schoolers, and live very sheltered life.
These parents keep the children out of public view to avoid registering them with the state as being homeschooled. They do not follow a curriculum, and do not wish to have social workers in their home or a license teacher to check on their childs education. So who is ensuring that the home-schooled children, and these children are called home-shooled children (unschooled) are receiving an education that will enable them to be socially acceptable? Therefor these " unschooled" children are the ones that I feel are being sheltered to much.
The day is coming where we will begin to hear of another form of abuse. Look at the Worldnet daily paper on an article from the judge in New Jersey." Titled Judge warms of child-abusing home schoolers. He said, In today's threatening world, were we seek to protect children from abuse, not just physical, but also educational abuse, how can we not monitor the educational welfare of all our children." Someone needs to pay attention to this growing group of unschooled children. All children have a right to an education and for that education to allow growth, not only physically, but also mentally.
I lived that life and know how hard it will be for these children to adjust when they must enter this fast-paced ever evolving world, the perpared are able to rise to the challenges of life and fortune of success. For the unprepared, life is not so. Protection goes only so far and you will not be by their side all their life, so educate.
Thank you,
Doris

You say that you are not refering to homeschooling, but your entire
story on your site attacks homeschooling which you have no experience
with personally. You have a poor private school experience and some
issues with your parents. It seems that you should work to resolve that
with them.

Parents have a right to stop the government from forcing unwanted education
on their children as well. There is inappropriate education that children are
forced to receive in public schools.

My wife and I homeschool. We provide our children with both sides of the story
when it comes to education. We teach them great skills that are never taught in
public schools. Additionally, I don't care for the political agendas that slant the
public education system.

If you call that sheltering my children, then that does not hurt my feelings.
As a parent, my job is to protect and prepare my children. My daughter has
been extremely blessed so far as a result. In fact, studies show that homeschooled
children are more successful in many areas.

Hello:
I have no problems with my parents, but was over protected, sheltered and naive to the world around me. This is the point that becomes hard for children when they must enter the real world as we know it today. It will surely be harder for them, then it was for me over 30 years ago. As I volunteered in my community I got to hear from many parents with family members who do homeschool, and the stories and feeling are the same. I can relate, and my heart goes out to the children who are being "unschooled". This is not about parents rights, but the rights of children to an education, and the social skills to meet the needs to enter the adult world they will be living in. Let us worry less about stepping on toes and do what is morrally right for the children in our nation.
Best wishes,
Doris

AWESOME!

I am so happy and grateful you suggested not worrying about stepping on toes because what I am about to say is no holds barred!

I am most convinced that our focused efforts where the element of doing "what is morally right for the children in our nation" need first begin with the education of ALL the WHOLE masses of "We The People".... That ALL need understand that we together have constructed and strengthened a structure "we" call "The Government" when in fact the real government is "we the people" who have gone to sleep and who have been chloroformed into inaction and apathy concerning the REAL abuse that happens IN the public school system... I KNOW because I grew up in it myself and have talked to thousands, tens of thousands of others who grew up in the same abusive system. And guess what, MY parents were back-woods farmers who sheltered me too, THANK GOD I found out the horrid AFTER I was "trained up in the way I should go" spiritually and thank God the profanity, deceit and control of the unsheltered was only learned by me after I had spiritual safe haven experience to live a strong life with in that cruel world.

The sheer shock I felt as a young adult in the job market is where I had the same effect of experience happen to me and sheltered in school by being placed in a small town school with no intentions of strengthening their students to financial success.

Instead, they were commissioned to teach and train a work force, hourly paid slavery when you get right down to the real matter.

The numbers are staggering compared to those who choose to un-school in the name of "home-schooling", and in so doing, agreed, cause stigma on the real home-schoolers like hot check writers do on the checking system for us good check writers.

Make no mistake about it, it is high time we shift our focus and energy from the few and onto the masses who are bombarded by not only out-right lies in our public schools, but all the head turning to many other abuses.... Want me to list THOSE?

Yes my friends, it is time for you to do here what you agreed to in the profile questions, and that is STUDY the KACP-SuccessRadio's Unique Mission and ask questions and get answers that we may once and for all make our public schools a place where TRUTH is taught and important sciences like the proven science of financial independence to be taught from pre-K through 12th grade.

Once we do THAT, we will be eradicating your "home-un-schooled at the very roots!

Please, on our KACP-SuccessRadio network, attempt to mention problems ever so brief and pay close attention to keeping the focus off the problems and onto the solutions.... And the solutions highly targeted at the pot of fuel rather than the flames and smoke. In other words, we here at KACP-SuccessRadio, in keeping with Positive Peer Pressure Programming must needs make sure our proposed solutions are directed at the root of any and all issues rather than involving ourselves in activity that looks good because others can see us spraying water onto some flames and fanning off smoke.

I have SOOOOOOO much to say on all this and MUST keep focused instead on getting the whole group together, in masses that we may march on Congress and dominate those we allowed to be the current domineering.

Without doing so, there will soon be no private homes to UN-SHCOOL in!

I do concern myself with the welfare of my child.
That is why they are not in public school or even
private schools anymore.

I am very plugged in to home school communities
and have not heard such comments from home schoolers
that you reference.

Again, your experience was with a poor private school
which can certainly happen just like poor public schools.
These scenarios are understandable, which is why I protect
my children from these injustices by giving them proper
education via home school. My daughter gets a much
better education as a result. Her grades, performance,
and critical thinking skills reflect that.

Based upon your own personal experience, I think that
is outlandish that you would attack home schooling
and the rights of families. While I don't agree with
abuse, I don't agree that the government should
determine what my child learns.

Dear Joseph:
Sorry, if you feel I am attacking rights of homeschool families. That is not so, and I'm trying to help you see what you have allowed to happen. I am trying to point out that homeschoolers of today have brought this problem on themselves by allowing the "unschooled " parents in their door to use their good name. Not only have you taken them in, but you fight to protect them. Well now you have our attention.

Dear Andrew:
Very nice letter with a point that has my attention also about public schools. When our President started making schools accountable there was a big change going on in the stystem. After the dust settled I found a better education was at hand. Teachers now have to meet guidelines every month with reports. I seen a good 50% increase in education. We can do better and I'm sure inner cities have not seen so well because of gang issues.
What I see lacking is the drive needed to want to succeed in life within their education. Some students are not book smart so school is just dull for them. If you put the drive in it, these same student who are more hands on can grab that and excel. Let me just give you my two cents.
1. We have a one week program in Elementary school on it's not nice to bully. Helps a bit, but not good enough. If each week we should have a half hour discussion, were children start out for ten minute writing three positive things they have done during that week to help others. This would set their minds in a positive direction of kindness and helping, and with a total new positive view of life in general.
2.High schools have so many programs that to me do now serve the students best. They need a program to bring up their self worth in a positive direction, that will also instill the drive in them to excel and want to make something of themselves. More positive, upbeat , alive program. What would be nice is to collect ideas on how such a program could be put together. Well Radio this could be a positive peer pressure program. Get companies to collectively donate to a contest for all to take part in, on the best planned out program to instill positve drive to excel in this difficult world. A program that is more hands on to be part of Freshman school agenda, as most drop out today are after freshman year.
If we can push positive we will get positive, and we can all work together for the better of all our children in this nation. Thats my two cents and everyone can feel free to give theres, and lets work this out.
Thank you,
Doris

Doris,

I am at a bit of a loss here.

I don't believe that I have allowed anything to happen though
I am curious of your statement about "unschooled" parents.
Please define and elaborate.

Also, I disagree public school improving recently.
I voted for the current President, but "No Child Left Behind"
seems to have done more to hurt education than help it.

Further, public education is like an assembly line education.
Humans are not identical. There are different learning styles
which public education doesn't seem sensitive to. Not to mention,
the ridiculous sex education, false science, and untrue history taught.

Additionally, children are not prepared for the real world by
public education. Along with the standards of Math, History,
Literature, Science, and such, we teach our daughter things
that she needs to know to live in the real world. It is a responsiblity
that parents should take seriously and I do!

Dear Joseph:
That is because you are one of the good homeschooler who truely do care about your child. Thank you for being that parent.
Unschooling
"Unschooling" is a term that can be used with two distinct meanings.
Some use the term "unschooling" to describe methods of education that do not resemble instructional schools. These people are primarily indicating that they do not use textbooks and/or do not spend much time at desks. The parents definitely are in charge of the children's education and they may use a variety of resources.

The term "unschooling," as coined by John Holt indicates that the parents do not authoritatively direct the child's education, but interact with the child following the child's own interests, leaving them free to explore and grow and learn as they wish.[27][28] Holt's "unschooling" assumption was that children learn directly through the experience of living, and encourages parents to live their lives with their child. Also known as interest-led or child-led learning, unschooling attempts to provide opportunities through real life where a child will learn without coercion. An unschooled child may choose to use texts or classroom instruction, but it is never considered central to education. Holt's unschooling philosophy included the inherent assumption that there actually is no specific body of knowledge that is, or should be, required of a child.[29]
Advocates for unschooling claim that children learn best by learning from doing. For example, a child may learn reading and math skills from playing card games, better spelling and other writing skills because he's inspired to write a science fiction story for publication, or local history by following a zoning or historical-status dispute. While proponents of other homeschooling philosophies may also use these methods, "unschoolers" will allow the child to initiate these learning activities instead of imposing them upon him.
The term "unschooling" is distinct from "deschooling," which may be used to indicate an anti-"institutional school" philosophy, or a period or form of deprogramming for children or parents who have previously been schooled.
Home education in the United States is governed by each individual state and therefore regulations vary greatly from one state to another.

Joseph this says it in a polite way. Some and I use some, who are the "unschooled" are simply to lazy to get up early in the morning, clean the kids up and provide clean clothes and get them on the bus for school on time. Some are hiding abuse in many forms. So the easy way out is to call themselves homeschoolers and no law says they can't . My heart is with those children.

However Andrew has asked for us to find answers in a positive way to improve public education. So in doing so to bring in ideas I have posted for positive input on this subject at this discussion. Hopefully many will join and we can create a positive form of action to better all children.

Thank you,
Doris Anne Beaulieu

Thank you for the intelligent reply in this matter.

Obviously, there are people who abuse ANY system.
The above description does not represent our family
and other good homeschool families.

I would say that there is not an epic amount of the above
occurring. To me, there is more abuse of education
going on in the public school system. In any case, a child
should never be abused.

With that said, public schools and government should be
penalized for their poor decisions in this. While I would
like to see it improved, I don't have much faith in it. They
have constantly turned away good recommendations and
removed things from the school which were a solid staple
of success in public education.

It is up to private organizations and responsible parents
to ensure that their children get the proper education.

Hello Jodeph;
Hope your having a nice weekend. There is more of this going on then you think and it has been going on for years. Only starting to come to surface with many more taking it's toll. I'd be interest in knowing if you read the California judge order of March 7th of this year on homeschooling. All state are watch it very carefully, and all states will follow. It's not ment to hurt homeschoolers in any way, but to do away with those rotten apples who use the good name of homeschoolers. The attention for rules to be equal across the board for all states has come. If I were a homeschooler I would want to work together to come up with a plan to deal with this instead of letting the goverment step in, but homeschoolers like yourself believe this problem is just not so and only few. You may also want to read the newspaper article from a Judge in New Jersey from the world net daily paper. The next form of abuse coming out is educational abuse. He talk about homeschoolers. Read up my friend and all home schoolers should.
Take care,
Doris

Yes, I have heard about the California case.
I am glad that I don't live there.

If the father was abusing the children then
charges should be filed based upon that
rather than pursuing a home schooling case.
The California situation seems to be an issue
of physical and emotional abuse rather than
educational abuse.

This is an interesting blog post from Michelle
Malkin that discusses how this is more about
the public school monopoly feeling threatened
by home schooling. It is not secret that it has
been targeted for some time.

California Home School Case Agenda

I certainly do keep myself well read. I wonder when I case
will come up because a child feels that their privacy rights
are being abused by their parents. LOL.
